Darnell Names Baggett the Starter
Blayne Baggett

The graduation of Chad Munson and Jon Drach opened up yet another battle for starting quarterback beginning with spring practice last April. Juniors Blayne Baggett and Ryan Cubit have been the favorites all along, but now Gary Darnell has named a starter for the opening match-up with Tennessee-Martin.
Blayne Baggett
was announced as the starting quarterback by head coach Gary Darnell at the conclusion of practice Wednesday night. The decision was delayed due to injuries that both quarterbacks had suffered at points during fall training camp.
Baggett edged out
Rutgers
transfer
Ryan Cubit
, son of former WMU offensive coordinator Bill Cubit, who is still nursing an injury. The Portage Central graduate will be a backup to Baggett along with fellow junior
Robbie Haas
.
The decision was made following morning practice on Wednesday during a staff meeting, and was made in part because Cubit’s strained shoulder was still keeping him off the field. Baggett was then informed by phone, and called into Darnell’s office to talk about the decision.
Darnell said that Baggett would be able to keep his starting job for as long as he performs at a high level. Both Cubit and Haas will see playing time in the opening game, but barring injury the job will remain Baggett’s.
Alex Engram
will be redshirted this season and is expected to be a backup next season.
Attention Students:
Beginning this season students will not only need to show a valid student ID to enter WMU athletic contests, they will now have their ID scanned to prove they are currently enrolled in classes.
Students are encouraged to arrive at the stadium early to avoid delays.
All Kick-off Times Finalized:
The kick-off times for away games have been finalized with the announcement of a 1pm start for the game at
Virginia Tech
. The game at
Illinois
is slated for a 1pm central time start. The complete schedule, including times, is available at wmubroncos.com.
