Hawkins Inks Contract Extension

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics announced today that it has extended the contract of head men’s basketball coach Steve Hawkins through the 2009-10 season.

“We are extremely excited to have coach Hawkins as a member of the Bronco family for the next several seasons,” Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard said. “He has already demonstrated the ability to direct the program to high levels of success on the court and in the classroom and we look forward to that continuing in the upcoming years.”

Hawkins took over the head coaching duties prior to the 2003-04 campaign, leading WMU to a 26-5 overall record and the program’s third NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. The Broncos claimed the Mid-American Conference West Division, Regular Season and Tournament championships en route to the postseason appearance.

“I would like to thank Kathy (Beauregard) and Dr. Bailey (University President) for the trust they have displayed in my guidance of the program,” Hawkins said. “It is not a responsibility I take lightly.

“I am excited about the future of Bronco basketball and continuing the program’s positive growth, Hawkins added.”
