Track Runs Past Toledo

KALAMAZOO (Jan. 9) - Competing in its first home meet in 15 years, Western Michigan posted a 94.5-53.5 victory over Toledo in dual meet action from University Arena/Read Fieldhouse. The home meet was WMU's first since hosting the MAC Invitational in February, 1990.

The Broncos scored points in all 14 events, capturing 10 individual titles along with a relay win. Senior Kristi Ford took top honors in the weight throw (57'-1") and high jump (5'-5") competitions while freshman Stacy Orosz set a school record in the pole vault (10'-11.75"). Chelsea Humphrey was also a double winner, claiming first place in the 55 meter hurdles (8.32) and running the second leg of the victorious 4x400 meter relay (4:08.77).

"You usually don't expect great performances the first time out, but you do expect your team to compete hard and that is what we did," said fourth-year coach Kelly Lycan. "We received a big shot in the arm with our fire power in the short sprints and got some contributions from our freshmen. We also had a viable entity in the pole vault, which was something we have not had in a while."

Western Michigan travels to the Bowling Green Quadrangular next Saturday (Jan. 15).
