Home ice continues to be the story in the Western Michigan-Notre Dame series, as the Irish recorded a 4-2 victory in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action from the Joyce Center. Notre Dame has now won seven of the last nine games against WMU on Irish ice.
Notre Dame
(2-0-1, 1-0-0 CCHA) didn't waste much time getting on the board. Junior RW Rob Globke notched his team-leading fourth goal just three minutes, nine seconds in the first period on an assist from Connor Dunlop.
Western Michigan
(2-1-0, 2-1-0 CCHA) responded at 9:04 when
Paul Davies
hit
Ben Gagnon
in front of the net for a redirection. UND closed the period with goals from Michael Chin (1) and Yan Stastny (2).
Globke and Gagnon both added their second goals of the night in the third period as Notre Dame extended its unbeaten streak to three games.
"When we fell behind by a 3-1 margin in the first period, we put ourselves in a hole and we had to battle back. You can't come out and get behind right away. Give (Morgan) Cey credit, he played a great game," said Jim Culhane afterwards.
The teams meet again Saturday night in Kalamazoo for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff at Lawson Arena.
NOTES: Sophomore
Mike Mantua
earned his first start of the season in goal ... Gagnon, who had the first multiple goal game of his career, earned Perani Cup No. 3 Star of the Game honors ...
Lucas Drake
was credited with two assists ... tonight's game was the first for WMU at the Joyce Center since March 3, 2001 ... with the win, UND claimed a 12-11-1 home ice edge in the all-time series.
