Ottney Steps Up

Mark Ottney

Redshirt freshman Mark Ottney saw significant playing time against Central Michigan due to an injury to senior Kevin Kramer. Ottney played very well and he talks about the win, his play, and the momentum this win will bring through the offseason.

Overall impressions on the win?

I think Trovon Riley did an excellent job. The offensive line stayed together the whole game after Kevin Kramer went down in the second quarter. I came in and played the rest of the game. I think both Fred McCants and Jake Gasaway played well. Both of them are seniors so that was great.

Overall offensive game plan?

We ran most of the game. We passed a little but I felt we ran most of the game and ran well. As a unit I think we played real well. Again Trovon really did an excellent job stepping up today. Daniel Marks is hurt and when Philip Reed went down Trovon had to go in there and get it done and he did. Overall I thought Munson played real well, running backs ran real hard.

How much momentum does this give you going into the offseason?

It feels real good to get a win going into offseason conditioning and stuff like that. Our confidence is up, especially since we haven't won up here in so long. That plus Central Michigan recruited me. I feel validated with my decision since I've beaten them two years in a row (laughing). Let's make it four or five years in a row!

Any different preparation for this game?

I think we had a different mind set this game. I thought we went out there like 'we are not going to lose this game.' We were in the locker room before the game telling everyone we were not going to lose this game. We were not going to flinch in the third or fourth quarter. We're going to win this one. The other games we lost it seemed we let them go at the end. We stuck together and never flinched today.

How important was it to send the seniors out like this?

I think it is great to put them out like this. We've never beaten Central here since they've been at Western. To go out on a good note now winning this game I feel a lot better now. Myself, I dedicated this game to the four seniors on the offensive line and I dedicate it more now because Kramer got hurt today. They are going out as winners and they'll remember this the rest of their life since it is such a milestone for us. Recommended Stories
