Douglas Aboard

Steve Douglas

Steve Douglas was the first high school prospect to be offered a scholarship this season by the Broncos. That should say something about how highly the coaching staff feels about this standout offensive lineman. Western did an excellent job landing Douglas despite serious interest by Colorado and Wisconsin.

By Douglas' own admission, he waited to long to accept an offer to Colorado and that worked to Western Michigan's advantage in the long run.

"I had an offer from Colorado for a while but I just took to long to make up my mind and they filled up," said Douglas. "Wisconsin had been recruiting me also but I did not have an offer from them so I wanted to make sure the same thing didn't happen with Western that happened with Colorado. I just got it over with and committed to Western instead of waiting on Wisconsin to offer in case they never do and Western might be full."

The Broncos are getting a top flight offensive guard in Douglas. At 6-4 and 280 pounds, Douglas currently benches 375 pounds and runs a 4.9/40. He lead his Joilet Catholic team to a 9-3 record and garnered several honors this season.

"I was All-state in 5-A in Illinois and also made All-conference and four All-area teams," said Douglas.

Douglas visited Western Michigan officially last weekend and was very impressed. He verbally committed to coach Cummings this past Monday.

"I liked the whole thing," said Douglas matter of factly. "The campus and facilities were excellent and I just felt that I fit in well with everyone there. I just love it there."

There is still some work to be done off the field for Douglas. He met with an academic advisor while on his visit to help him get ready for a January re-take of the ACT. Douglas currently has a 2.6 core GPA and received a 13 on his first ACT. He'll need to increase that next time to become a full qualifier.

"I'm getting ready to do much better the next time and think things are in place for me to do that," said Douglas.

Douglas chose the Broncos over Iowa State, Southern Illinois and Wisconsin. Recommended Stories
