Gray To Visit Broncos

Desmond Gray

At 6-5 and 265 pounds Detroit Cass Tech defensive lineman Desmond Gray is receiving a lot of attention from college throughout the country. Western Michigan is one of eight colleges he is seriously considering. We caught up with him hours before he was slated to leave for Kalamazoo for his official visit with the Broncos.

Gray is currently considering Akron, Eastern Michigan, Maryland, Duke, Utah, Bowling Green and Buffalo in addition to the Broncos. Following his official visit to Kalamazoo this week end he will trip to Utah, Duke and Buffalo respectively.

When Bronco coaches went to watch Detroit Cass Tech this season, it was to recruit wide receiver Emory Jones but they came away knowing Gray was one they wanted as well. Gray was contacted shortly thereafter by Bronco coaches.

"I had known of Western because Mario Evans went to my high school and he played there," said Gray. "Coach Woods contacted me earlier this season and we've been speaking ever since."

Gray starred this season for the 5-4 Cass Tech team by registering five sacks, 86 tackles, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Gray, who is a full academic qualifier (3.1 GPA/20 ACT), is being recruited on both sides of the line but says Western is recruiting him for defense. So who leads for his services?

"It is really up in the air right now," said Gray. "I want to see all of these schools first before I make any decisions. I have no leader at all right now."

Gray did say that he has had very positive interaction with both coach Woods and Gary Darnell.

"Both of them came here for an in-home visit and my mother spent a lot of time talking to them," said Gray. "I'm bringing here on my visit with me so she can see if what she thinks of Western is actually the case."

Gray, who plans to study Business or Sports Management, says he is very much looking forward to his visit to Kalamazoo this weekend.

"I just want to see the campus and see what campus life is like there," said Gray. "I've been there a couple of times before but this will be different."

With a good number of colleges pursuing Gray, one might think early playing time would be a factor but Gray has a level head and wants to make sure he is ready.

"Coach Darnell said it was up to me if I play next year or red shirt," said Gray. "He says he doesn't want to redshirt me but if I'm not in the shape I need to be in then I'll redshirt. My plan is to redshirt unless I think I can step in and play at a high level. I always thought I'd play at a Big Ten school but if I go to the MAC then I think I can play right away. I just have to come in fast and strong enough."

Gray also participates in basketball and track where is throws the shot and discuss. Recommended Stories
