Biography:
A senior from Wooster, Ohio. In 2001, Matt shared punting duties with Adam Anderson and Jeff Welsh. He kicked 17 punts for 588 yards, with 3 fair catches, 3 touchbacks, and 8 inside the 20. In 2000, Matt booted six punts over 50 yards and landed 10 inside the 20. Against Wisconsin he averaged 44.7 yards on 6 punts. Despite fielding 6 Matt Steffen punts in the MAC Championship Game, Marshall was able to return only one for nine yards. Matt was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, an award given to the nation’s top punter. Matt was one of two true freshmen to letter in 1999. He finished fourth in MAC punting in a season in which he kicked five punts over 50 yards and 10 punts inside the 20-yard line. His season long of 58 yards was kicked against Marshall at Waldo Stadium. Made his collegiate debut by punting 5 times at Florida in front of 83,000 fans. At Waynedale High School he was honored as the All-Ohio Division 5 punter and Northeast Special Teams Player of the Year. Twice he was selected to the All-Northeast Ohio Squad. He averaged 43.7 yards per punt as a senior.
