Biography:
Lucas is a defensive forward with great instincts. He is very similar in style to roommate Paul Davies. He is among the fastest skaters on the team and a top penalty killer. He attended Michigan State games as a teen. Lucas was a teammate of former MSU goalie Ryan Miller for many season of youth hockey. He also played against current teammate Josh Akright. He took up the game as an eight year old after watching a friend play the sport. Luscas has spent his entire hockey career in the state of Michigan, playing midgets in Sault Ste. Marie and juniors in Grand Rapids. An assistant coach in Grand Rapids was former Bronco Brian Tulik. Lucas is the Broncos' self-proclaimed ping pong champion. As a sophomore Lucas earned CCHA All-Academic Special Mention and he is a WMU Scholar-Athlete. He was named Bronco Player of the Week after scoring goals in back-to-back games of the Michigan series. Lucas also received the Perani Cup No. 1 Star of the Game honors with a two goal performance (including the game winner) versus Sacred Heart. He earned No. 3 Star honors with a goal versus No. 6 Nebraska-Omaha and he earned the No. 3 Star with the game-tying goal versus Notre Dame. He sealed the 5-3 win over Ferris State with an empty net goal. Lucas scored WMU's last goal of the season in the playoff loss to Ohio State. As a freshman Lucas was a co-recipient of the WMU Ed Edwards Most Improved Player Award. He skated on WMU's top penalty killing unit. He was named Bronco Player of the Week and scored a short-handed goal on a backhander against UM's Josh Blackburn. Lucas scored from an improbable angle with a shot from the goal line at Miami and was named the Perani Cup No. 3 Star. He contributed a goal and an assist at Northern Michigan in a 9-7 playoff win. He produced two assists in a win over Michigan State and Notre Dame. Lucas buried his first collegiate goal against Ferris State at Lawson Arena.
